Civil and Environmental Engineering professor awarded for researching engineering countermeasures for wrong-way driving

Huaguo Zhou, the Elton Z. and Lois G. Huff Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, was recognized by the California Department of Transportation for his study on intoxicated drivers, which identified effective engineering countermeasures to prevent wrong-way driving and will be presented at the 2025 Transportation Research Board meeting.

Civil Engineering professor co-authors national wrong way driving solution handbook

Huaguo Zhou, the Elton Z. and Lois G. Huff Professor of civil and environmental engineering at Auburn University, co-authored a handbook aimed at helping state Department of Transportation offices reduce the risk of wrong-way driving crashes. The "Wrong-Way Driving Solutions Handbook," released in August, will be distributed to all 50 state Department of Transportation offices. Zhou said the handbook is the first to target reducing wrong-way driving crashes.

Each year, nearly 400 people are killed as a result of wrong-way driving on freeways, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration. That’s why a pair of Auburn University professors in the Department of Civil Engineering have been awarded a grant to study wrong-way driving solutions.
