URISE
URISE, Undergraduate Research Improving Student Experience, is an online asynchronous non-credit course that any Biosystems Engineering or Biological & Agricultural Technology Management (BATM) student can apply for. The URISE course will provide students with opportunities to:
- Gain a fundamental understanding of research
- Design of experiments
- How to find and summarize research articles
- Technical writing for research
- How to find a graduate program and apply
- Creating research posters
- Presenting your research
- Explore research and academic career pathways

FAQs
- How long does it take? URISE participants usually need about 6-8 hours total to complete all of the modules.
- What do I get for completing the course? URISE participants receive a $100 stipend and a digital badge they can display online.
- What is the benefit to me? URISE participants can expect to gain a better understanding about how research is conducted in an academic setting and what to expect when applying for and enrolling in graduate school.
- Can I get University credit for completing URISE? No, this is a non-credit course.
- Are there any required meetings? No, however we will meet a few times each semester, usually with free food, to chat about various topics and socialize.
- How much time do I have to finish? Most URISE participants finish in one semester, however any participant can take longer as long as they finish before they graduate.
- Do I have to do the modules in order? No, after you complete the orientation module, you may proceed to any other module.
- Are there assignments and tests? There are some assignments which are scored and given feedback, however there is no “grade” for the course. There are no tests or quizzes, but there is an exit survey.
- Do you have to already be involved in research to participate? No, URISE is open to ALL BSEN and BATM students.
- Does URISE help me get into graduate school? Yes – you can promote your digital badging as well as the topics you have learned.
- Do I get to do any research as part of URISE? No, not directly, however the URISE directors are happy to help you get involved with undergraduate research and participation should help you understand research better.
URISE is funded through a grant from the Office of Academic Insight Bright Ideas program. URISE is administered by faculty and staff of the Department of Biosystems Engineering. All course materials are copyrighted.
