Kristin and Jacob McGhee
What brought each of you to Auburn to study engineering?
Kristin: I am originally from Alpharetta, Georgia surrounded by red, but grew up cheering for my Mom's alma mater, Clemson. It wasn’t until my first tour at Auburn that I was blown away and decided that Auburn Engineering was the place for me!
Jacob: When it was time to look into colleges, I knew I wanted to go into civil engineering. Auburn had the best civil engineering program in the state and offered me a scholarship to attend. I took a visit to the university and absolutely loved the campus. Throw in the fact that I was a mild Auburn fan throughout high school and there wasn't any other choice. Auburn is the only place I applied and that first fall semester couldn't get here soon enough!
How did you meet?
Kristin: We technically met for the first time at Camp War Eagle - an Auburn love story! Our groups met up to do a bonding activity. Later freshman year, we turned out to be in the same calculus II class. We spent a lot of time in the library studying together that semester, and the rest is history! We were both in the drumline during our time as undergrads and both decided to stick around to get our master's degrees in engineering. I had always jokingly (kind of seriously) said to Jacob that if he did not propose on the 50 yard line in Jordan-Hare Stadium, then the answer is no. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, we were unable to make it down to Auburn for a game that season. Not taking any chances, Jacob managed to recreate the 50 yard line in Nashville with the help of our friends using orange and blue paint, a patch of turf and a couple of pylons. Needless to say, my answer was YES! We loved our time in the Auburn University Marching Band so much that we had drums at our wedding and played through our favorite cheers!
Where are you now?
Kristin: We moved to Nashville shortly after graduating with our master's degrees in 2020. Given the state of the world, it was difficult to make new friends in a new city. Thankfully, we found a home in the Greater Nashville Auburn Club and I quickly became involved. I am Programs Co-Chair and on the fundraising committee within the club. I also was recently accepted into Auburn's Young Alumni Council. I am currently a regional sales support engineer at Schneider Electric and Jacob is a civil engineer at Kimley-Horn working in roadway design. We return to Auburn frequently throughout the year to attend various sporting events and to spend time in our favorite place.
What’s your favorite Auburn-related memory or moment together?
Kristin: Our favorite Auburn memory is the 2017 UGA game! We were both in the marching band at the time. Dr Spurlin, our band director, gave the most hype speech to the seniors at gameday rehearsal that morning which set the attitude for the rest of the day. Jogging out of the tunnel for pregame that day was one of the best performances we had ever experienced. The atmosphere was electric - you could tell there was something special about that game before it even started. It was the first season the AUMB used the lights for a halftime show - I was an engineering student on the original team that helped create them! We were under the tunnel preparing for halftime when the crowd erupted. A band member came running up and down the tunnel exclaiming that Auburn had scored! Thankfully, Auburn kept scoring and we were able to celebrate a big win over #1 UGA together - WDE!
