Why this degree?
Acquiring a Ph.D. degree will equip students with advanced technical knowledge and skills in the areas of mechanical engineering through course work, independent creative research and communication necessary to seek career opportunities in industry, national labs, or academia.
You are eligible to apply if...
- You hold a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent from a recognized institution (minimum GPA 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and demonstrable research experience) OR you hold a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent from a recognized institution (minimum GPA 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale)
- You submit GRE results meeting stipulated minimum scores
- You submit three letters of recommendation from former professors and supervisors
- You submit a statement of purpose narrating your background, motivation, career goals and research interests

To complete the program you must...
- Complete course work (minimum of 60 credit hours of course work, including dissertation, beyond BS degree; a minimum of 21 credit hours of graded mechanical engineering courses at the 7000-8000 level; a coordinated minor of 9 credits of graded graduate courses in an approved field)
- Submit a plan of study
- Pass written and oral qualifying exams
- Submit a written dissertation and successfully defend it
What can you expect?
- Complete the course work in consultation with faculty adviser/s
- The faculty research adviser/s and student prepare a plan of study that is approved by the department chair and the dean of the Graduate School
- Carry out creative research in close consultation with faculty adviser/s
