The Auburn University Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has welcomed Missie Smith as its newest faculty member. Smith joins the Center for Occupational Safety, Ergonomics, and Injury Prevention (OSEIP) as an assistant professor, continuing her research in human factors.

Six ISE doctoral students awarded ASSP Foundation Scholarships

Since 1990, the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in academic scholarships and professional education grants to occupational safety and health students and professionals working toward their educational goals. This year, six doctoral students in the Auburn University Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) have been awarded these scholarships, totaling $32,000.

Following a national search, Mario Eden, the Joe T. and Billie Carole McMillan Professor and chair of Auburn University’s Department of Chemical Engineering, has been named as the 14th dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, according to an announcement by Interim Provost Vini Nathan.

Occupational safety education and research programs renewed

The Center for Occupational Safety, Ergonomics, and Injury Prevention, part of the Auburn University Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, recently had two education and research training programs renewed for five years by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The programs are part of the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety, a collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The grants supporting the programs bring approximately $2 million to Auburn. NIOSH and Auburn University have a history dating to the early 1970s, but the history of the Auburn University Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering safety and ergonomics program goes back to the late 1960s.

ISE professors named to Amazon, National Safety Council advisory council

Two research training programs associated with the Center for Occupational Safety, Ergonomics and Injury Prevention at Auburn University have been reaccredited for another six-year term. The programs are “Occupational Safety & Ergonomics” and “Occupational Injury Prevention,” and both are sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

In specialty rankings, civil and industrial engineering are both ranked No. 4 in their respective programs; electrical and mechanical, both No. 7; and engineering management, No. 11.

Auburn Engineering posts banner year in research

The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering brought in $59.6 million in externally sponsored research awards from Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019. The college has also placed in the top 10% of engineering institutions in the nation for research expenditures for the past 15 years.
