New faculty: Assistant professor in ECE researching means to make computing systems more efficient, reliable and secure

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how engineers solve complex problems, including the way computer hardware is developed and protected. Sujan Saha, a new assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, researches AI-driven hardware design, system verification and hardware security. Through his research, he aims to develop tools that make advanced computing systems more efficient, reliable and secure.

Learn more about Saha’s research, his approach to teaching and mentoring students, and what brought him to Auburn.

What are your research interests, and what drew you to this area of work?

My research interests are AI/large language models (LLMs)-based hardware design, AI hardware design and verification, hardware assisted System-on-Chip (SoC) verification and SoC security.

Tell us about a current research project you’re excited about. What are you hoping to accomplish, and what impact could the work have?

I am currently exploring a few research directions. One of these is to investigate the prospect of domain-specific language models in electronic design automation (EDA). As large language models (LLMs) consume more computational resources and have more knowledge on almost everything which is not required for specialized tasks, domain specific language models may become more efficient to create LLM-based solutions for EDA. I would like to carry out this research over the next few months and see how these perform compared to LLMs in terms of accuracy, computational resource, security and privacy.  

What attracted you to Auburn, and what makes it a good place for you to pursue your research and grow as a faculty member?

Multiple things impacted me to choose Auburn. First, everyone I’ve found here is supportive and welcoming, which is required for me as a beginner. Second, I think I am getting all the resources to carry out my research which will help me to grow as a faculty. Third, overall, Auburn is a nice, livable city in terms of weather, schools, and affordable living. 

How would you describe your approach to teaching and mentoring students? What can students expect from you in the classroom?

My approach to teaching and mentoring students is connecting with them. When I know what they need and what they are expecting from me, I will be able to deliver the best. Along with regular class materials and lectures, they will find all the support from me whatever they need to succeed in the class. 

What do you enjoy doing outside of your work at Auburn?

I like to travel, so right now I am exploring different places around Auburn. I like to spend time with family and do some physical activity also.
