Xiao Qin, professor and director of graduate programs for the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), was one of four Auburn University faculty members selected to the 2025-26 SEC Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP) fellowship cohort.
This professional development program identifies, prepares and advances academic leaders for positions at SEC institutions and beyond. Fellows gain valuable insights into higher education administration while building a robust network of peers across institutions.
“I am honored to serve as an SEC ALDP fellow and look forward to strengthening my leadership skills to better support the graduate programs and faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering,” Qin said.
Qin, who joined the Auburn faculty in 2007, oversees the academic direction and development of graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in one of the university's most dynamic and rapidly evolving disciplines.
His research spans critical areas of computing including parallel and distributed systems, real-time computing, storage systems, fault tolerance and performance evaluation.
Qin's scholarly contributions earned him recognition through a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in 2009 for his project, “Multicore-Based Parallel Disk Systems for Large-Scale Data-Intensive Computing.”
Beyond research and teaching, Qin has played an active role in the broader computer science community. He previously served as a subject area editor for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Distributed System Online and has contributed to program committees for numerous international conferences, including IEEE Cluster, IEEE International Performance, Computing and Communications Conference and the International Conference on Parallel Processing, helping to shape the direction of research in distributed computing systems.
“Dr. Qin's selection as an SEC ALDP fellow is a well-deserved recognition of his leadership qualities and for his outstanding contributions to CSSE as the director of its graduate programs,” said CSSE Chair Hari Narayanan. “His dedication to our graduate programs, combined with his distinguished research record and collaborative approach, makes him an ideal candidate for this fellowship. We are proud to see him represent Auburn and our department in this prestigious cohort and we look forward to the fresh perspectives and enhanced leadership skills he will bring back to benefit our students and faculty.”
Joining Qin from Auburn University on the 64-member SEC cohort are Brent I. Fox, special assistant to the dean and director of student affairs in the Harrison College of Pharmacy, Justin Miller, professor and head of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, and Laura W. Plexico, associate dean of engagement and graduate studies in the College of Liberal Arts.
