Nima Shamsaei, Philpott-WestPoint Stevens Distinguished Professor of mechanical engineering, will deliver the 2024-25 Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, January 28. His presentation, “Additive Manufacturing Program at Auburn University," will explore the groundbreaking advancements in additive manufacturing (AM) research being made at Auburn.

Shamsaei, one of the world's most-cited researchers in AM materials characterization, metal fatigue and fracture, mechanics of materials and structural integrity, was hired in 2016 to direct Auburn's new National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME). Established through a public-private partnership with NASA, NCAME later became one of the founding partners of the ASTM Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence.

The center has secured more than $60 million in funding from organizations like NASA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Department of Defense. It has also become an important personnel pipeline for the AM industry, with alumni taking leadership positions at organizations like Blue Origin, GE Aerospace and Sandia National Laboratories.

"It's obviously an honor to be selected to give this address," said Shamsaei, who is also one of the university’s recent Creative Research and Scholarship Award recipients. "However, I’m presenting the achievements of a large group of faculty, post-doctoral associates, staff, research engineers, graduate and undergraduate students who have been working diligently at NCAME."

The Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture begins at 3 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Brown-Kopel Center. A brief award presentation and reception will follow.

“Auburn’s additive manufacturing research has received plenty of attention, thanks to some of NCAME’s high-profile projects,” said Allan David, the college’s associate dean of research. “NCAME not only conducts fundamental research in additive manufacturing, it also leads applied research that aligns closely with the needs of many of our aerospace and defense partners. This research will help build the future thanks, in part, to the work we’re doing here. That’s something Auburn has a right to be proud of.”
