2023 in review: Top Auburn Engineering stories of the year

2023 was an exciting year for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. From captivating new research projects and facility announcements, to student, faculty and alumni success stories, below we count down the top five most-popular news stories of the past year:

Selen Cremaschi

5. Selen Cremaschi named as the next chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering

Selen Cremaschi, the B. Redd and Susan W. Redd Eminent Scholar Chair Professor, has been named as chair of Auburn University’s Department of Chemical Engineering. 

Cremaschi succeeds Mario Eden, who was named as dean of Auburn’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in April. She is only the third woman to chair or head an Auburn Engineering department. Her tenure begins July 1.

4. King Charles consults Auburn aerospace grad on sustainable aviation, neckties

1969 aerospace engineering graduate Ed Waggoner, deputy associate administrator for programs for NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, participated in a roundtable discussion on sustainable aviation before an event marking the groundbreaking on the new £58 million addition to the University of Cambridge's famed Whittle Laboratory, first public engagement for King Charles following his May 6 coronation. The King spoke one-on-one with Waggoner about NASA's work on disruptive innovation in net zero aviation and energy.

3. Professor in ECE part of $1.8 million study to explore security solutions for semiconductor supply chains

Assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering Ujjwal Guin's proposal, “Securing Semiconductor Supply Chains and Networks using Zero-Knowledge Proofs and Blockchain,” earned a $1.826 million grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFSOR).

2. Auburn University appoints Mario Eden as its new dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering

Following a national search, Mario Eden, the Joe T. and Billie Carole McMillan Professor and chair of Auburn University’s Department of Chemical Engineering, has been named as the 14th dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, according to an announcement by Interim Provost Vini Nathan.

1. Auburn Engineering climbs to No. 31 in U.S. News and World Report rankings

U.S. News and World Report, which ranks graduate programs nationally each spring, designated Auburn Engineering No. 31 among public institutions when its annual list was released Tuesday, April 18. Auburn Engineering’s graduate programs continued its upward trajectory in the annual rankings among public institutions, climbing 10 spots in the past four years.
