Professor in wireless engineering named editor-in-chief at top-tier IEEE journal

Shiwen Mao, director of the Wireless Engineering Research and Education Center at Auburn University, has been named editor-in-chief of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking (TCCN), a top-tier publication of the IEEE focusing on spectrum and machine learning.
“It is a tremendous honor, but more importantly, it is a big commitment,” said Mao, Professor and Earle C. Williams Eminent Scholar. “This appointment provides me with the opportunity to bring even more recognition to Auburn University, the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, and the work we do here in wireless engineering.”
Mao previously served as a TCCN associate editor, area editor of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering, IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, and ACM GetMobile, and a steering committee member of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and chair of IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering. He was also recently elected chair to the IEEE Technical Committee on Cognitive Networks and serves on IEEE Communications Society’s Board of Governors.
“It’s very important for faculty members to participate in international activities, such as journals like this and conference organization, and take leadership roles within the research community,” he added.
TCCN carries an impact factor of 6.359 according to The Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2021 and is ranked in Q1 (i.e., “first quartile” or the top 25%) of the subject area "Telecommunications."
It’s Mao’s desire to not only maintain TCCN’s prestige, but also increase it. “Working as editor-in-chief will be like a full-time job, and I appreciate TCCN steering committee’s trust on me,” said Mao, a decorated researcher who not only earned a “Best Paper Award” and “Best Demo Award” at IEEE conferences this summer, but also earned a $993,319 National Science Foundation grant in May for his study, “Learning based Resilient Immersive Media-Compression, Delivery and Interaction.”
“Pushing the journal’s impact factor and ranking is one aspect of the job, but of course another aspect is handling submitted papers to provide a super experience to our authors and readers,” he said. “Our team of associate editors from across the world will handle the review of a large number of submissions each year. We must provide authors with detailed, professional and faster review processes, and to select the best papers to advance the research and development of the field”
TCCN welcomes submissions that deal with the design, analysis, evaluation, experimentation and testing of cognitive communications and network systems, as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence empowered wireless communications and networks, Mao said. He will also increase the journal’s annual publications from four to six issues.
Mao’s appointment begins Jan. 1.
