New Pedestrian Bridge at the Forest Ecology Preserve

During the week of April 1, 2001, faculty, staff, and students from the Biosystems Engineering Department constructed a pedestrian bridge at Auburn's Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve.  Design work for the bridge was initiated during the fall semester of 2000 by students in the course FOEN-6230 (Design of Engineered Wood Structures).  Final design modifications were made by Steve Taylor.  Components were fabricated by Structural Wood Systems of Greenville, AL.

The bridge is a longitudinal glued-laminated timber deck bridge using southern pine lumber.  It is 17 ft long by 7 ft wide.  The bridge was designed for an 85 psf uniform live load with a reduced deflection limitation of L/240.  There are four deck panels placed side by side.  Each Combination 48 deck panel is 21 inches wide by 5 inches thick.  All wood components were preservative treated with pentachlorophenol to 0.6 lb/cu. ft. retention levels.   In addition, components in contact with soil were given surface applications of copper naphthanate.

Faculty, Students, and Staff that helped with construction were:

Dr. Steve Taylor, Dr. Jim Baier, Doc Flynn, Matt Veal, Andrew Boutwell, Jon Davis, Eric Phillips, and Lori Montgomery.
