Student Outreach Association for Robotics (SOAR)


Purpose:

Our goal is to provide Auburn students with the opportunity to become involved in efforts to support & promote STEM Education throughout Alabama and surrounding states through robotics programs such as competitions, workshops, and mentoring.

We sponsor a robotics team that competes in the VEX U Robotics Competition.

STEM Nights

Teamed up with Auburn High School Engineering Team to share STEM Activities & Demos at local schools

  • 8/17 @ Auburn Early Education Center
  • 8/23 @ Creekside Elementary School
  • 10/17 @ Wrights Mill Road Elementary School
  • 10/28 (Glow with STEAM Night) @ Drake Middle School
  • 10/29 @ Pick Elementary School
  • 11/14 @ Ogletree Elementary School

Auburn Area VEX IQ League

VEX IQ Fall League

  • Started first Elementary/Middle School Robotics League in the state. 18 teams from Auburn & Opelika participated. Qualified 5 teams to state championship.

VEX U

  • Organized Team & Began construction of robots over summer
  • 1st Robot completed in September
    • Primary match robot
  • 2nd Robot Completed in October
    • Initially secondary match robot, switched to focus on skills matches
  • 3rd Robot Completed in December
    • Secondary match robot
  • Began planning for VEX U tournament @ Auburn in January

SCORE Events

SOAR works alongside the Southeastern Center of Robotics education to assist with several events throughout the year

  • 10/10-11 Southern Regional VEX Conference
    • SOAR members led sessions on programming & Event planning for robotics teachers & students from across the South
  • 10/26 VEX on the Plains VEX Robotics Tournament @ Auburn High School
    • SOAR Members provided volunteers for roles such as referees, judges, etc.
  • 11/9 VEX IQ Fall Tournament @ Sciences Center Auditorium
    • SOAR Members provided volunteers for roles such as referees, judges, etc.
  • 12/7-8 South's BEST Robotics Championship
    • SOAR Members provided volunteers for roles such as referees, judges, etc.

Other

SOAR also partners with various programs around the state throughout the year

  • 11/16 VEX Robotics Tournament @ Brewbaker Tech Magnet School
    • SOAR Members helped run tournament & mentor High School & Middle School teams at BrewTech

    • Shifted Focus to skills matches
    • Finalized programming & practiced driving
    • Skills Attempts
      • 2/8 - Scored 229 total (4th place in World)
      • 2/15 - Scored 280 total (1st place in World)
      • 2/26 - Will make final attempt at AL State Championship

    • Shift focus back to match robots

    • SOAR Members ran tournament as head referee, emcee, and judge advisor
  • 2/1 VRC Tournament at Hartselle Junior High School (Hartselle, AL)
    • SOAR Members ran tournament as head referee, emcee, and judge advisor
  • 2/1 VEX IQ @ Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum
    • SOAR Members provided volunteers for roles such as referees, judges, etc.
  • 2/18 VRC Tournament @ Central High School (Phenix City, AL)
    • SOAR Members ran tournament as head referee, emcee, and judge advisor
  • 2/26-29 Alabama State VEX Robotics Championships
    • SOAR Members will provide volunteers for roles such as referees, judges, etc.
    • SOAR members will take large role in logistics of setting up & running this large multi-day event

  • 2/4 - Girl Scouts Visit
    • SOAR Members organized a visit night for Girl Scouts to learn about robotics & earn their robotics badges
  • 2/20 - Cub Scouts Visit
    • SOAR Members organized a visit night for Cub Scouts to learn about robotics & earn their robotics badge

    • SOAR Members are organizing a visit night for another troop of Cub Scouts to learn about robotics & earn their robotics badge
