Registration and Schedule

Click here to register for this course. Course registration is limited to 30 participants to promote interactivity. A web camera and high speed Internet connectivity are necessary.

This live, virtual offering of a traditional course is broken down into six (6) synchronous lecture sessions over two weeks. The live sessions will be held via web conference on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm ET, April 19-30, 2021.

This virtual training program is taught by NCAT for those who are involved with asphalt construction. Engineers and technicians from all sectors of the asphalt industry need to be knowledgeable about asphalt materials and construction practices in order to successfully build, preserve, and maintain a sustainable highway system.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this course is to provide a basic understanding of all phases of asphalt technology. Upon completion, the participant will be able to make knowledgeable decisions related to asphalt pavements and communicate effectively with asphalt specialists when the need arises.

Program Content

This course consists of lectures, virtual demonstration of laboratory tests, and discussions concerning different phases of asphalt technology such as:

  • - Asphalt Binders: refining, physical properties, binder testing, and modified asphalt binders;
  • - Aggregate: aggregate testing and required aggregate properties for high performance;
  • - Asphalt Mixtures: desirable mix properties, types of mixes, volumetric mix design, and laboratory performance testing;
  • - Construction: asphalt plant operations, laydown and compaction methods, and quality control/quality assurance of asphalt mixes; and
  • - Asphalt Pavement Design/Rehabilitation: design, maintenance, rehabilitation, and recycling.

Laboratory demonstrations include an asphalt binder lab tour, asphalt mix design test, and some performance tests. Video tours of the NCAT Test Track and Lee Road 159 Preservation Study are also included.

Each participant will be provided .pdf copies of the presentations and useful links to other asphalt paving resources. The course provides participants with materials needed for general reference when the need arises in practice.
