What is Mini Baja??

What means Mini Baja?

The Society of Automotive Engineers sponsors a range of Collegiate Design Competitions every year, including Formula, Aero Design, Walking Machine, Snowmobile, Supermileage and Mini Baja.

A Mini Baja car is a scaled-down all terrain vehicle that runs on a Briggs & Stratton 10Hp Engine and typically handles much better than an ATV and is much safer to roll (there is a "short" list of safety and design regulations set forth by SAE that must be followed by all competing teams.)  Students from colleges and universities all over the world spend a year or more designing, building, and testing vehicles to race at one or all of the three North American competitions and three International Competitions.

Auburn University has a successful history in SAE Mini Baja and also lays claim to one of the few all-female Mini Baja teams.  It was first created in 1998 as a response to SAE's Challenge to Women Leaders, and the 2000 team won the grant.  The team was revived in 2002 and after a respectable rookie season (and a Perseverance Award from Polaris Industries that resulted from their visible teamwork at East Competition) the remaining five members of the team who were not lost to graduation became committed to coming back in full force for the 2003 season, getting a head start that no other Lady Tigers team had before.  The 2003 Lady Tigers team competed in both the East and Midwest Mini Baja competitions, becoming the first ALTMB team to compete at Midwest.  The lady tigers have since competed annualy at the East and Midwest races.  The 2005 Lady tigers for the first time ever competed in all three North American races venturing out to Arizona to celebrate SAE's 100th anniversay in the Baja 100.
