Gulf Region Intelligent Transportation Society Annual Meeting - November 3, 2011 - The officers of the Auburn ITE student chapter traveled to Montgomery to attend this conference.

 

October 27, 2011 - The guest speaker was Chris Hilyer from the Alabama Department of Transportation. He spoke with the student chapter about the proposed ITS infrastructure throughout the state of Alabama. The presentation highlighted the proposed ITS deployment in the Greenville area as well as the Montgomery and Prattville area.

 

October 20, 2011 - The Fall ALSITE meeting was held at the Auburn Hotel and Conference Center. There were two technical sessions including presentations by professors at Auburn University as well as two presentations by engineering in the public sector. After the technical sessions concluded a tour of the National Center for Asphalt Technology’s test track facility was given.

 

October 13, 2011 - Jeff Ramsey, the City Engineer for Auburn, spoke with the student chapter about the upcoming engineering projects around Auburn. He gave an overview of the structure of the City Public Works Department including their roles and responsibilities. He then talked about the widening of Glenn Avenue and the installation of stamped concrete crosswalks on Magnolia Avenue.

 

Visit to Georgia Navigator Transportation Management Center, Atlanta, GA - October 6, 2011 - A group of student members visited the Georgia Navigator Center, which oversees ITS applications in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia as well as other ITS deployments throughout the state. The group received a tour of the facility and how the Georgia Department of Transportation uses real-time traffic data and displays it on variable message boards and integrates it for the state 511 system as well as the online Georgia Navigator website. The visit also included a demonstration of the capabilities of the Georgia Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) vehicle.

 

September 29, 2011 - Doc Dorsey, the City Engineer for Opelika, spoke to the student chapter about the issues associated with implementing traffic signal enforcement cameras. He discussed the legal aspects, how the citations would be issued, and how the cameras would operate. This was the first meeting of the Fall semester and discussion of plans for the Fall and Spring semesters was done in this meeting.

 

July 28, 2011 - For our only student chapter meeting of the summer, William Hutto, Jr., the director of the Auburn University Regional Airport, came to speak about aviation and the recent additions and upgrades to the Auburn University Regional Airport.

 

June 8-10, 2011 - Students and faculty members were given the opportunity to attend the annual joint meeting of the Alabama and Deep South sections of ITE in Gulf Shores, AL. There were several sessions of technical presentations and the meeting concluded with a banquet and presentation of the Harold M. Raynor Scholarships, one of which was presented to student chapter member, Tommy James.

 

April 21, 2011 - Richard Caudle of Skipper Consulting discussed some of the recent changes and upgrades related to pedestrian safety around the Auburn University campus. Student chapter members gained a greater understanding of some of the construction happening around campus. This was the final student chapter meeting for the semester. Upcoming events were discussed.

 

February 24, 2011 - Julie LeNoir of Skipper Consulting spoke to the student chapter about the “Traffic Signalization on Donahue Drive & Wire Road”. This topic was of particular interest to the student chapter members because of its effect on traffic congestion around campus.

 

February 10, 2011 - The Department of Civil Engineering’s newest faculty member, Dr. Jeff LaMondia, presented “Measuring Paratransit Patron Behavior and Accessibility”, which was closely related to his dissertation. This student chapter meeting allowed the members to become more acquainted with Dr. LaMondia and provided some exposure to different areas of graduate research.

 

January 27, 2011 - This was the first student chapter meeting for the semester. This meeting began with a discussion of the upcoming chapter events. Student chapter member and graduate student, William Minor presented “Traffic Patterns and Considerations in a College Town”.
