What is A.M.S.?
Located at Auburn University in
Alabama, the Auburn Materials Society (AMS) is an organization for
those interested in the study of materials science and engineering. The
society is open to all who wish to join. AMS is associated with
the Materials Engineering
Curriculum. Membership in AMS provides the following benefits: the
ability to participate in AMS-sponsored plant trips, the opportunity to
hear engaging guest lecturers, as well as the chance to socialize with
other people interested in materials science and engineering. AMS
membership is comprised mostly of Materials Engineering (MTL) faculty,
graduate, and undergraduate students.
AMS is jointly associated with
ASM International and The Minerals, Metals,
and Materials Society (TMS). For those interested members, AMS
sponsors trips to attend chapter meetings. Additionally, AMS has
affiliations with American
Ceramics Society (ACerS), the American
Welding Society (AWS), and the Society of Plastics Engineers
(SPE).
Important Announcements:
- The Birmingham Chapter of ASM International has scheduled its annual
Students' Night meeting for Thursday, November 9,
2000. The meeting will be held at the Red Lobster
Restaurant, 1030 Montgomery Highway in Vestavia Hills, located on Highway
31, about 2.2 miles north of Exit 252 of I-65. Social hour is at 5:00
p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m., and the program is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner
is complimentary for students of Metallurgical and Materials
Engineering. This year the Birmingham Chapter is asking students to
discuss projects or papers that they have completed or are currently working
on. They may utilize charts, graphs, photographs, or the object itself
for demonstration purposes. This will be an opportunity for each of
the student chapters to earn up to $150.00 for the student operation.
The Birmingham chapter will award $50.00 for each project presented, but a
maximum of $150.00 per student chapter. The format will be very
informal, as follows:
1. Student chairmen will
introduce their participants and identify subject matter.
2. Attendees will
then circulate among those presenting projects, asking questions and offering
comments. The format will not require a formal presentation to
the entire audience.
- The 130th TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition will be held February
11-15, 2001 in New Orleans, Louisiana! Travel Scholarships
are available. Applications for travel scholarship will be accepted
until December 15th. For more information, please check the Student
