Fundamentals of Electric Power Engineering

Course Number:
V20G_23
FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRIC POWER ENGINEERING
As the name implies, the course covers the fundamentals of electric power engineering, which can be divided into five sections:
- Analytical tools: ac circuits; 3-phase circuits, wye and delta connections, symmetrical components
- Power Transmission Lines: EM Fields, HVAC, HVDC, ratings, circuit models
- Power Transformers: mutual inductance, multi-windings, 3-phase connections, circuit models
- Power Generation: the 3-phase synchronous machine, solar, wind, pumped storage
- Loads: Static (heating, lighting), Rotating (motors)
*This course was designed to give engineers the background needed to pursue graduate level electric power courses and programs.
Each of the five sections includes six lessons. The course is best suited for engineers of all disciplines with an interest in electric power engineering and is taught using a mix of qualitative information (pictures, diagrams, etc) and quantitative information (basic engineering analyses)
The objectives of FEPE are to impart a better understanding of
- why we want energy in the electrical form;
- the major components of a ground-based electric power system;
- balanced three-phase ac circuits; why 3-phase?
- 3-phase power transmission Lines;
- multi-winding power transformers in single and three-phase circuits;
- electric power generation in thermal and hydro power plants;
- renewable energy sources as solar and wind.
