PhD Opportunities in Occupational Safety, Ergonomics and Injury Prevention at Auburn University

Seeking motivated doctoral students to join the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. The department is home to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health funded Occupational Safety & Ergonomics (OS&E) and the Occupational Injury Prevention (OIP) programs. Both programs are affiliated with the Deep South Center (DSC) for Occupational Health & Safety Education and Research Center (ERC). The DSC provides strong academic programs of study for its students, which includes scholarships, stipends and tuition support.

Possible scientific research investigations include: Optical and/or inertial motion capture in applied and industrial settings; Human performance (biomechanical and physiological) studies in evacuation applications; Advanced ergonomic modeling of the spine; Development and validation of personalized ergonomic
assessment tools; Warning sign design and comprehension, etc.

Projects may involve performing advanced probabilistic and statistical analyses, laboratory and field experiments, working with human subjects, and developing statistical models from collected data. Some of the projects will involve
collaboration with kinesiology, computer science and software analysis, psychology, and other engineering departments.

Applicants must be self-motivated and hard-working, with good written and verbal communication skills. Quantitative skills, basic understanding of mathematics, physics and undergraduate engineering is essential. Experience with motion capture, work physiology, experimental design or other laboratory skills are useful. Strong quantitative background irrespective of your undergraduate major are desired. Preference will be given to applicants with
undergraduate engineering backgrounds.
