The Office of Career Development and Corporate Relations (CDCR) in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering will kick off its 2021 Employer Series with a panel titled “Breaking Down Buzzwords” on Thurs., Jan. 21 at 4:30 p.m. The virtual session, which will be hosted by Garry Morgan, special assistant for inclusion and diversity education in the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, will include experienced panelists from Alabama Power, Brasfield & Gorrie, AM/NS Calvert and Stryker Corporation.

Discussions will focus on buzzwords such as racism, colorblindness, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and specifically, how employees or potential employees can gauge an organization’s values and culture surrounding these subjects. Attendees can expect an open dialogue as the panelists address how their organizations are approaching these topics and offer advice to help students navigate difficult conversations in their own careers.

“I hope that participants will see and hear an exchange of ideas and best practices regarding diversity, equity and inclusion within industry,” Morgan said. “Specifically, I am excited for the return of these panelists because of their transparent engagement and leadership during the session that occurred in the fall. Lastly, participants can look forward to networking and learning with corporate partners in a small group setting.”

Morgan emphasized the importance of language in the workplace, no matter the industry.

“Written and spoken language are primary modes of communication. Having language that acknowledges and affirms the diverse work force that already exists is a key competency regardless of industry,” he said. “For Auburn engineers, this is critical as they will be positioned to lead.”
