Zachary Lee, ’18 mechanical engineering, was named the 2018 outstanding student for the mechanical engineering program. He fell in love with mechanical engineering because of its ability to bring the abstract to life.

“Growing up in Oxford with two science teachers as parents, I always knew I was going to end up working with some kind of math and science in my career. In school, it always fascinated me how these seemingly abstract equations could be used to actually predict how something would behave in real life. That’s why I chose mechanical engineering: I wanted to be able to study and design things I can actually see and understand. Earning this award is such a great honor to me. It lets me know that all those long hours of work did not go unnoticed, and that they will definitely pay off in the future. I’d also like to thank all of the professors who have given me advice and mentored me throughout my time at Auburn. This fall, I will be attending Cornell University to work toward a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. My long-term goal is to become a college professor and do research in heat transfer and energy systems, with a focus on developing new sustainable energy generation technologies for the future.”
