Projects - 40% of final grade

The primary goal of projects in this class is to address an intriguing and non-trivial issue of embedded systems. Your project can be conducted in various forms such as the development of an embedded application or a research paper. Although your project may be either individual or group efforts, it is worth noting that your project has to be a significant development work or research study. A project is intended to synergize with students' research and development interests by addressing an aspect of the student's current work or allowing the student to do some preliminary investigation of master theses or Ph.D. topics. The project aims at providing a great opportunity to the students to investigate an issue to which they may not otherwise devote efforts and time.

Project Proposals

You must submit a project proposal and have it approved. The process is described below.
  1. Email me a one paragraphs or two, describing your proposed project. (Due Friday, Feb. 24 at 11:59pm)
  2. If the proposal is approved, go to step 3. Otherwise, go back to step 1.
  3. Write and submit a short proposal (about 2-3 pages) that provides detailed information pertinent to your project. (Due Friday, March 3 at 5:00pm)
  4. Conduct your research project.
  5. Write a technical report describing the project and the experimental results.

Your proposal must include the following sections:

 * Background: description of what is the reason for the project
 * Project Goal: what is the goal, what is the novelty of the project
 * Approach: how to solve the problem
 * Future work: what you will do by the end of the quarter

Both the proposal and the final paper must be formatted  in the standard in 2-column IEEE proceedings format.

Please download instructions, a sample report (DOC format), and a sample manuscript (PDF format).

Please download the Guide for Writing Project Proposals here

Progress Reports (Due Tuesday, April 4 at 5:30pm)

A written progress report must be submitted.  Your progress report can be generated based on your project proposal.

As such, your progress report will have to be organized in the following sections:

 * Background: description of what is the reason for the project
 * Project Goal: what is the goal, what is the novelty of the project
 * Approach: how to solve the problem
 * Future work: what you will do by the end of the quarter
 * Project Progress: what have you accomplished so far
 * Future work: what you will do by the end of the quarter
