Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this 4.5 day workshop is to provide engineers, testing personnel, and inspectors a basic understanding of the asphalt mix design process. This will be accomplished through a review of materials specifications, test procedures, and general mix design requirements for a Superpave or Marshall volumetric mix design and will include hands-on training using standard test procedures and specification criteria. Upon completion, attendees will be able to develop a volumetric mix design in their laboratories. The primary focus of the course will be on the Superpave mix design system. This course includes NCAT certification or mix designer certification for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Program Content

This course consists of intensive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training using Superpave and Marshall design methods and volumetric mix design procedures. The course will be split between classroom lectures and hands-on work in the laboratory. Approximately 2 1/2 days will be spent in the classroom and two days in the laboratory. A brief outline of the course follows.

  • - Overview of asphalt mix design methods
  • - Superpave binder testing and specification
  • - Testing and requirements for aggregate properties
  • - Volumetric analysis
  • - Superpave mix design
  • - Moisture susceptibility testing
  • - Other laboratory performance tests for rutting and cracking resistance

  • - Demonstration of binder testing procedures
  • - Aggregate tests associated with Superpave
  • - Volumetric mix design using the Superpave gyratory compactor
  • - Moisture susceptibility testing
  • - Rut testing with Asphalt Pavement Analyzer and Hamburg Wheel Tracker

Each participant will be provided a copy of the Asphalt Institute's "Superpave Mix Design" (MS-2) and a binder containing a print-out of all of the PowerPoint presentations.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadline

The registration fee of $950 includes the training program, course materials, and certification upon successfully completing the certification exam with a score of 80 or higher. Pre-payment is required and must be received no later than 10 days prior to the start date of the course. Cancellations made up to 10 days prior to the start date of the course will result in a refund less $100 processing fee. No refunds will be provided for a cancellation after that date. Please register no later than 10 days prior to the start of the course.

The costs for housing, food and transportation are the responsibility of each participant.

Funds may be made available for state DOT personnel to attend this course if the agency participates in the Southeast Superpave Center pooled fund. Please contact Don Watson for further information.

NCAT will accept applications from any individual who would like more information about asphalt mix design procedures. To get the most out of the course, it is recommended (but not mandatory) that the attendee have some experience with mix design procedures.

Continuing Education

The course will provide 3.6 CEUs or 36 Professional Development Hours.

This course will be conducted at NCAT's research facility at 277 Technology Parkway in Auburn, Alabama. Hotel accommodations are close by.
