Material Processing Center

TONY OVERFELT, DIRECTOR

Materials Processing CenterThe Materials Processing Center at Auburn University was founded to educate students and perform research and development in materials processes important to industry and government operations in Alabama, Georgia and beyond. Specific interest focuses on processes important to the metal casting industry including solidification science, thermophysical properties of liquid metals, particulate molding, and heat treating. Center projects have investigated the thermophysical properties of advanced magnesium alloys, vacuum-molding technology, solid-state sensing of hydrogen dissolved in molten aluminum, microstructural development in directionally-solidified nickel-based superalloys, transport phenomena in fluidized beds, and decomposition of lost foam patterns during simulated casting. In addition, Center personnel work directly with external clients to develop new cast metal products for advanced engineering applications. Recent sponsors and collaborators have included Citation Corporation, ACIPCO, Ford Motor Company, ATS Stahlschmidt & Maiworm, Vulcan Engineering Co., Laempe+Reich Corp, General Motors Corporation, Bendix Heavy Vehicle Systems LLC, Thermasys, Eck Industries, NASA MSFC and the American Foundry Society.
