The Department of Polymer and Fiber Engineering currently awards approximately forty scholarships; about thirty of these are funded by the Alabama Textile Education Foundation from investment income. The scholarships are and will continue to be used to attract high-quality students into the department. In addition, an anonymous donor has provided $1M in his estate for prestige scholarships in textile engineering.
The value of our current scholarships has remained constant while both in-state and out-of-state Auburn tuition increased 12% in 2002, 16% in 2003, and has risen in smaller increments since 2003. It will, most likely, continue to rise. These increases make it extremely difficult to attract high-quality students. Monies are needed to supplement our current scholarships in the face of rising university costs to keep us competitive in attracting the best students into our programs.
