M.S.:

At least 3 members (incl. major professor)

Ph.D:

4-5 members (incl. major professor), at least one from outside MATL, majority from MATL

Oral Exam:  

Offered twice per year – Fall (~August-September) and Spring (~February-March)

Based on 5 core subjects (thermodynamics, crystallography, phase transformations, physics of solids, mechanical properties)

Taken at first opportunity after completion of core courses (at AU or other institution)

Written Exam:

50% based on core subjects / 50% based on integration of subjects
Taken after passing the Oral Exam

Proposal:

Written description of PROPOSED research
Presentation / defense of proposal to advisory committee

Presentation scheduled through the Graduate School (“General Oral Examination”)

Taken within 2 years of entering program

Final Presentations:

Provide written document to committee prior (at least 1 week) to presentation
