Dr. Alan Scottedward "Scotte" Hodel
April 6, 1962 - January 9, 2009
Dr. Scotte Hodel passed away on January 9, 2009 after a year-long valiant battle
with cancer. He joined the faculty of Auburn University in September 1989, and
over the next 20 years cemented a reputation for collegiality, wit, idealism in
teaching, and a vibrant Christian witness. Dr. Hodel's teaching and research activities encompassed applications of automatic
control and linear algebra. Among his software development accomplishments are
much of the Octave control systems toolbox (http://www.octave.org), which provides
an open-source "freeware" functionality mostly compatible with MATLAB. He was
a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE),
and served many years as Associate Editor of several IEEE technical publications. As a faculty member, Dr. Hodel is remembered for his love and concern for students.
He served nearly 10 years as faculty advisor for the student branch of the IEEE,
and he was an enthusiastic mentor for student competition teams. In recognition
of his teaching excellence, he received the 2007 College of Engineering Pumphrey
Teaching Award. The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering is establishing the Scotte Hodel Scholarship
in memory of Dr. Hodel's contributions to Auburn University. Donations to the
scholarship fund may be sent to: Allyson Dozier '00
Checks should be made payable to "AU Foundation," with "Scotte Hodel Scholarship"
in the memo line of the check.
