The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering at Auburn University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The initial appointment is for a five year term, renewable for a consecutive term. Successful candidates must possess a distinguished record of teaching, research, and scholarship, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. The Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering is responsible for providing leadership in research, teaching, research fund raising, and outreach and should have demonstrated significant accomplishments in these areas.
Consistent with the goals of the College of Engineering, applicants must demonstrate the vision and qualities necessary to lead a dynamic faculty into the Top 20 of all electrical and computer engineering departments in the nation. The Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering must have the academic and professional qualifications to be awarded tenure at the rank of full professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. A substantial record of research and scholarly achievements with a national reputation is essential along with a strong commitment to teaching and service. Previous academic leadership experience is desirable, but not essential.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, established in 1891, comprises 28 faculty, 560 undergraduate students, 50 doctoral students, and 80 masters students. Bachelor's degrees are offered in electrical engineering, with options in computer engineering, and in wireless engineering. The wireless engineering program is offered jointly with the Department of Computer and Software Engineering. Graduate offerings include Master of Science (thesis), Master of Electrical Engineering (non-thesis), and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the areas of digital systems, digital signal processing, wireless communications, electromagnetics and antennas, control systems, power systems, microelectronics, biomedical engineering and image processing. The department received $4.5M in extramural research funding in 2007, and is home to several research centers and laboratories including the Alabama Microelectronics Science and Technology Center, the Wireless Engineering Research and Education Center, the Laboratory for Electronics Assembly and Packaging, and the Center for Advanced Vehicle Electronics.
