Welcome New Graduate Students

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. I hope your journey - both physical and intellectual - has been smooth and you are ready to start your graduate studies with us. Here is some information that will help you prepare for the beginning of the semester:

  1. My office is 3127E Shelby Center. Please stop by sometime and introduce yourself.
  2. If you have not yet consulted with a faculty member about your schedule, meet with me to decide on the courses to take this fall. Keep in mind that we have grouped our courses into seven categories. We ask that you eventually take one course in five of the seven categories. This will give you enough momentum in our program so that you can get to the point of selecting an academic advisor who will guide you through the remainder of your graduate studies. (I'll be your temporary advisor until you select a permanent one.) Please note that all international F-1 students are required to sign up for at least 9 credit hours.
  3. Course registration is done through AU Access/Tiger i. Use your student user name and password. They are found on the acceptance letter you received from the Graduate School. If you have misplaced your letter, or can not log on, please go to the Graduate School (106 Hargis Hall) and ask for assistance. If you are blocked from registration, please see either me or Ms Barbara McCormick (3101 Shelby Center).
  4. If you have a car and plan to park on campus, obtain your parking permit from the AU Safety and Security Office, located in the Dawson Building, on the corner of Thatch and Donahue Streets. Please note that bicycles should also be registered.
  5. All on-campus graduate students will be given a mailbox in 3101 Shelby Center. The mailboxes will be set up the second week of the semester.
  6. International students are expected to attend an orientation offered by the Office of International Education. The orientation will include an English refresher, as well as information on the community, immigration rules, health care, etc.
  7. Those with a graduate teaching assistantship (GTA), a graduate research assistantship (GRA), or a fellowship should plan on filling out the necessary personnel paperwork with Ms Michelle Wheeles in 3101 Shelby Center. Domestic students should bring some form of identification, such as a driver's license or Auburn University student identification card and social security card. International students should bring their I-20, I-94, and passport.

Office assignments will be made the first week of the semester. When you've been notified of your office location, please obtain an office key from Ms Wheeles.
  8. The Graduate School orientation will be held at 8am on August 16th in the Student Center Ballroom. Contact the Graduate School (844-4700) for more information.
  9. There will also be a Computer Science and Software Engineering graduate student orientation at 5:00pm on August 19th in 3129 Shelby Center. All new CSSE graduate students are expected to attend both orientations.
  10. Lastly, the CSSE Graduate Handbook is available on the CSSE homepage. Please acquaint yourself with the policies and requirements described in it.

I wish you a rewarding stay at Auburn University. War Eagle!
