Graduate Admission

The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering offers two Master's degrees, Master of Science (M.S.) (thesis option) and Master of Software Engineering (M.Sw.E.) (project option), as well as the Ph.D. degree. The department currently has over 450 undergraduate majors and 140 graduate students. It offers bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Wireless Engineering. The students within the department are quite involved professionally, as evidenced by active chapters of ACM, IEEE-CS, and UPE. The faculty is committed to a balanced program in both instruction and research, with the goal of achieving excellence in Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Parallel Computation, Computer Networks, Database, Operating Systems, Language Theory and Compilers, Human/Computer Interaction, Multimedia, E-commerce, and Hardware/Software Codesign, Information Assurance, Network Security, Wireless Engineering.

The University

Auburn University, founded in 1856, was the first land grant college in Alabama. It has over 23,000 students, and it is located in the town of Auburn, which is about seven miles from the county seat in Opelika. The Auburn/Opelika community has a population of over 100,000 (not including the students). Auburn is a small, pleasant town located off Interstate I-85, which provides easy access to Montgomery and Atlanta. It lies about 60 miles east of the Montgomery Airport, 100 miles southwest of the Atlanta International Airport, and 120 miles southeast of the Birmingham International Airport. There are frequent direct flights from Atlanta to all major North American and West European cities as well as connections to principal Asian cities.

Application Requirements/Deadline

  • GPA > 3.0 (typical cases)
  • GRE general > 1200 - for all applicants
  • TOEFL - 550 (or 213 on computer test) minimum for international students
  • TSE - Test of Spoken English, helpful for graduate teaching assistantship consideration. (international students)
  • GRE subject (CS) - Not required.

At least three months before the start of a term. International applications must be received 6 months before the start of a term. For Fall semester assistantship consideration, ALL materials must be received by February 15.

Financial Support

  • Teaching Assistantships: $ 930 - 1,450 per month (35-40) + tuition waiver. Additional funding for summer is normally available.
  • Research Assistantships: At least at the levels of TAs (30 - 45) + tuition waiver.  A
  • PhD applicants with a master degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering, are given preference in assistantship consideration. All applicants will be considered for assistantship automatically. No Additional forms are needed for financial support consideration.
