Strengths

  • Peak of Excellence - CSSE and ECE share the AU Peak of Excellence for Information Technology. The IT Peak has provided five new faculty slots.
  • Center for IMPACT (Innovations in Mobile, Pervasive, and Agile Computing Technologies) - In the first year, this Center has made significant progress in establishing research programs in the areas of software vulnerability assessment, and cellular and wireless applications.
  • Wireless Engineering - CSSE's leadership in the software option of the wireless engineering degree program and CSSE's hiring of faculty with expertise in the wireless area are leading to an emerging strength is this area.
  • Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education - Through an effort led by CSSE, the National Security Agency has recently designated Auburn as providing a significant contribution in meeting the national demand for information assurance education and contributing to the protection of the national information infrastructure.
  • Faculty - Since the department was created in 1984, the quality of CSSE's faculty has steadily improved.
  • Quality of Undergraduate Programs - The faculty and graduates alike feel that we have progressive, excellent programs. CSSE's software engineering and wireless engineering degrees are cutting edge programs.
  • Quality of Support Courses - CSSE provides high quality computing courses for all Auburn students. For example, our PC applications course, COMP1000, is taken by most non-technical majors (25 sections of 40 per semester) and our introductory programming course, COMP1200 or 1210, is taken by all engineering majors.
  • Graduates from Underrepresented Groups - CSSE continues to be one of the top producers of computer science and software engineering graduates from underrepresented groups (specific rankings will appear in the August issue of Black Issues in Higher Education).
  • Collegiality - An important aspect of the CSSE faculty is their mutual respect for one another's research.
