Concrete Materials Laboratory

The Auburn concrete laboratory is located in the basement of the Harbert Engineering Center. The concrete laboratory forms a key component of the concrete research at Auburn. The laboratory allows faculty, staff, and students test to assess the various fresh and hardened concrete properties that may affect the performance of concrete members.

Current Equipment:

• Hardened concrete testing laboratory occupies 750 ft² of floor space
• 800 ft² of floor space for processing of aggregates
• 400,000-lb compression testing machine
• Freeze-Thaw chamber and test equipment
• Rapid chloride ion permeability test equipment 
• Match-cast concrete cylinder molds
• 12 x 12 ft temperature-controlled moist curing room
• 11.5 x 11.5 ft temperature- and humidity-controlled chamber
• Hydration chambers
• Aggregate jaw crusher
• Batching scales
• Ultrasonic concrete testing equipment
• Impact-Echo concrete testing equipment (ALDOT)
• 1 x 4 ft³ and 1 x 3 ft³ drum mixers
• 1 x 12 ft³ drum mixers
• 3 x concrete maturity meters (Early-age strength prediction)

Equipment/Facilities to be Acquired:

• 350,000-lb compression testing machine (automated controller)
• 22,500-lb flexural testing machine
• Temperature-controlled (73°F) mixing/batching room
• Aggregate pulverizer (ASR Testing - ASTM C1260)
• Weather station (evaporation rate, curing conditions)
• Moisture correction scales
• Temperature- and moisture-controlled environmental chamber
• Adiabatic hydration equipment
