FOEN 3000.  Introduction to Forest Operations. (2) Lab. 3 hrs/wk.  Prerequisites: FORY major.  Introduction to basic field operations in forestry including site preparation and planting, harvesting, and primary manufacturing processes. Summer.

Required for students in the Forest Engineering Option pathway.

Course Objectives: Orient students to engineering applications in forestry operations including timber harvesting, stand regeneration methods, and wood products manufacturing.

  • Tree length harvesting operations
  • Cut-to-length harvesting systems
  • In-woods chipping
  • Fundamentals of lumber manufacturing operations
  • Fundamentals of plywood operations
  • Introduction to composite wood products
  • Fundamentals of pulp and paper operations
  • Chip mills and chip transportation systems

Course contributes to the professional component by serving as one of the engineering science courses.

Course contributes to the following program outcomes:  a) apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering, h) broad education in understanding engineering in global and societal context, and j) gain knowledge of contemporary issues.
