Reinforced Concrete Design: Axial Compression and Bending

This course is the third in a series on the topic of reinforced concrete design following the American Concrete Institute’s Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11).  The first two courses are not prerequisites for this course.  Fundamentals of column design are presented.  This course focuses on the capacity of columns without slenderness effects.

Learning Outcomes

 

Discussion and examples illustrate the behavior, principles, and calculations necessary to

• Use an axial load – moment, P_n – M_n, interaction diagram to evaluate the safety of a column cross section
• Calculate points on the P_n – M_n interaction diagram
• Determine appropriate strength reduction factor, φ
• Determine the shear capacity of a column cross section
• Evaluate the capacity of a column cross section under biaxial bending

This course is designed for engineers seeking a presentation of basic principles of reinforced concrete design.  Level of material presented is comparable to a senior-level university course.  Engineers who are changing focus of their careers or who only occasionally inspect or design reinforced concrete members will find this course of particular interest.
