Karen Nix, Computer Science and Software Engineering, PhD student

Q: When did you start and when do you expect to finish?

A: I began in summer 2017 and expect to graduate in spring 2022.

Q: Where did you earn your previous degrees, and what are they in?

A: I earned my bachelor's degree in computer science from LaGrange College and later earned my master of science degree in computer science with a concentration in software development from Columbus State University.

Q: What have you been up to since then?

A: I work full time for the City of LaGrange (Ga.) government as a web developer and GIS Supervisor. I am married to Mitch Nix with one daughter, Millie. And a new addition is on the way! Mary Nix is due Oct. 7, 2020.

Q: What made you decide to join this graduate online program?

A: It has always been a dream of mine to receive a PhD in this field. However, when I married and had my first daughter I knew my dream would have to be placed on hold. After my daughter turned a year old, I thought why not go ahead and try to achieve this dream? Furthermore, our family was moving to Auburn due to my husband opening a business in the Opelika-Auburn area. It seemed like a great fit and a dream come true!

Q: What has been your personal experience so far with the 100 percent online format?

The online format has been extremely flexible. I am able to manage my home life, work full time, and be a student. The support and encouragement from my professors is amazing and has truly inspired me to continue. The professors want you to succeed, which is an important aspect of the online program. They are very student-centered.

Q: Would you have gone back for your PhD if not for the fully online format?

A: In the beginning, I first attempted to attend Auburn Engineering (graduate) school as an on-campus student. I found it quite difficult. I work in LaGrange, Ga., and the different time zones were tough, as well as the traveling back and forth between the two cities. It really began to wear me down. In addition, I struggled with balancing a home life. I began having doubts about pursing an engineering degree, and I almost withdrew until I spoke with my advisor and he recommended I transition to distance learning on account of my demanding lifestyle. If the online format would have not been available, I do not believe I would have been able to achieve my dream at this phase in my life. I am incredibly thankful for this program as well as the faculty.

Q: How do you expect this graduate degree to enhance your professional life?

A: The courses I have taken have helped me in my current career and enhance how I do my job. I feel I am equipped with more strategies to take back to the workplace. I am able to lead effectively and generate possible solutions – particularly out-of-the-box ideas – independently and with groups.

Q: What would you tell someone who was thinking about applying for an Auburn Engineering Online program?

A: It is never too late to achieve a dream! Reach for the stars when they’re so easily made accessible to you. This program is available to you at your fingertips and conducive to a hectic lifestyle. It stands to benefit anyone in an engineering role.
