As a child, Avry Prewitt’s world was filled with construction — Lego towers, pillow forts and elaborate Minecraft creations. That early passion for building grew into a purpose, leading her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering at Auburn University.
Prewitt will cap off her college journey by serving as the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s graduation marshal at Auburn’s fall commencement on Saturday, Dec. 14.
“During high school, I developed an interest in calculus and physics, which led me to explore engineering paths,” Prewitt said. “When I began to research civil engineering, I realized I could utilize my mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills and innovation to develop and construct structures.”
Beyond excelling academically, Prewitt actively participated in the Chi Epsilon National Civil Engineering Honors Society, the International Buddy Program, the Society of Women Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
For the past two years, Prewitt has served as vice president of Auburn’s Chi Epsilon chapter. Under her leadership, the chapter hosted a national conference for all collegiate Chi Epsilon chapters, earning both a national chapter scholarship and a national officer leadership scholarship.
After securing a Woltosz Fellowship, Prewitt plans to continue her education at Auburn, pursuing a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering. She will graduate as an honors student and recipient of scholarships from the American Water Works Association, Alabama’s Water Environment Association and Thompson Engineering.
While working with Mark Barnett, a professor in civil and environmental engineering, Prewitt secured an internship with a water and wastewater engineering firm, igniting her passion for environmental engineering.
“Once I began to study hydraulics, I quickly realized that my calling was to study and design water and wastewater systems,” she said. “I continued to develop my skills as an environmental engineer, and I saw firsthand the impact this type of work can make on desperate communities.”
Prewitt said her career goal is to become a professional engineer who splits her time equally between consultation and philanthropy.
“I understand that water and wastewater facilities are a privilege to have, despite their necessity. I want to utilize the privileges I have as an American, college graduate and U.S. citizen to help populations that do not have the same access to water and wastewater treatment,” Prewitt said. “I aspire to work alongside other engineers and be at the forefront of innovation in my industry. My dream is to see the work, to which I have dedicated my life, positively change the lives of others.”
As part of her graduate fellowship, she will research wastewater infrastructure in Alabama’s Black Belt region with Barnett.
"Avry is a shining example of the ingenuity, determination and service-minded spirit that define the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. From excelling in her studies to leading nationally recognized initiatives, she has demonstrated a commitment to not only mastering her craft but also making a meaningful impact on society,” said Mario Eden, dean of engineering. “Her dedication to water and wastewater systems highlights the transformative role engineers play in addressing critical global challenges, and we are immensely proud to see her represent Auburn Engineering graduates and lead our fall class of 2024 at the commencement ceremony.”
Commencement inside Neville Arena begins at 6 p.m. with alumnus Gerald Pouncey, ’82 chemical engineering, delivering the keynote address. Pouncey is the chairman of Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP and chair of the Auburn Engineering Alumni Council. Additionally, Charles Gavin ’59 textile engineering, will receive an honorary doctorate of science at the ceremony.
Additional information, including updates regarding inclement weather, is available on the commencement website, and information will be posted on Facebook and Instagram accounts.
All ceremonies will be live-streamed, and recordings will be available on the commencement website following the weekend festivities. Graduates and their families are encouraged to check the website regularly for updated information.
