Saad Biaz, professor of computer science and software engineering, was awarded the 2021 Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award by the Computing Research Association (CRA).

CRA, formed in 1972, is an association of more than 200 North American organizations active in computing research and education. Its mission is to enhance innovation by joining with industry, government and academia to strengthen research and advanced education in computing.

The CRA Undergraduate Research Facility Mentoring Award is given to outstanding individuals and recognizes “exceptional mentorship, undergraduate research experiences and guidance on admission and matriculation of their students to research-focused graduate programs in computing.”

“We are very proud of Saad and all of his accomplishments within the computing discipline,” said Hari Narayanan, computer science and software engineering chair. “We are delighted to have an educator of his caliber at Auburn, knowing how much he has improved the lives of his students through his teaching and mentoring skills.”

Biaz received his undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Henri Poincaré University in France and received an additional doctorate degree in computer science from Texas A&M University. He has been an Auburn Engineering faculty member since 2001 and his research interests include wireless networking, distributed systems, mobile, pervasive computing and unmanned aerial vehicles.

“I am humbled by this award that recognizes the contribution of Auburn University to advance computing by encouraging undergraduate students to engage in advanced research in this field,” Biaz said.

Biaz has received numerous awards for his teaching and mentoring abilities, including the Outstanding Faculty Award in computer science and software engineering in 2006 and 2008. He also received the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship in 2013 and was named the Mentor of the Year by the Auburn University Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship in 2014.
