100+ Women Strong, an organization that aims to recruit, retain and reward current and future female engineers, will host its Fall New Student Welcome event starting at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Broun Hall. Incoming female freshmen, transfer students and graduate students are encouraged to attend. Parents of new students are also invited and will receive an informative list, "top 10 things parents want to know."

The reception will offer new engineering students the chance to network with other incoming students of like majors as well as 100+ Women Strong members and faculty members in attendance. Guests will learn about the organization's activities, including its successful mentoring program and a resume book, sponsored by 100+ Women Strong for director-level sponsors, that allows female engineering students to upload their resumes to be considered for co-op placements, internships and employment.

The event's keynote speaker is Auburn Engineering alumna Paula Marino, executive vice president of Southern Company's Engineering and Construction Services. Marino leads approximately 1,700 employees across multiple areas of the company and oversees a $2 billion project budget annually while managing $7 billion in active capital projects.

A founding member of 100+ Women Strong, Marino earned her bachelor's degree in 1992 and her master's degree in 1995 in electrical engineering from Auburn. She began her career at Southern Company in 1993 and progressed through roles in distribution, transmission, fossil-hydro generation and nuclear generation before assuming her current position.

"Engineering is an extremely important profession," Marino said. "I want to leave a legacy in my field and I strive to do that each day through the people I touch and the work I do."

Marino serves on the Center for Energy Workforce Development board of directors, Auburn University's Alumni Engineering Council and Electrical Engineering Industrial Advisory Board and the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board.

In addition to being named Outstanding Alumna from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, she was named the Engineering Council of Birmingham's 2012 Engineer of the Year and received the 2015 Engineering Leadership Award. In 2017, Marino was inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.
