Former astronaut holding 'Tribology in Space' seminar

Former astronaut and retired Navy Capt. Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper will hold a seminar at Auburn University on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. in the Sciences Center Auditorium.

Her seminar, titled “Tribology in Space,” will highlight her experience lubricating mechanical systems on the International Space Station. Stefanyshyn-Piper was a NASA astronaut from 1996 to 2009, participating in two space shuttle flights and five spacewalks.

She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 and 1985, respectively.

In addition to her career at NASA, Stefanyshyn-Piper also served in the U.S. Navy as an engineering duty officer, diving and salvage officer, chief technology officer and commanding officer.

Stefanyshyn-Piper is a member of the advisory board for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s tribology and lubrication science minor. Her seminar is sponsored by the Tribology and Lubrication Science Society and the Space Club.
