Chemical Engineering Senior Recognized for Biomedical Engineering Research

Parker Sizemore, an Auburn chemical engineering senior from Cumming, Ga., was selected as a 2005 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Undergraduate Student Award Winner for Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Research at the society's meeting September 28 through October 1 in Baltimore.

Established in 1968, BMES is an international professional society for biomedical engineering and bioengineering with a mission to promote the increase of biomedical engineering knowledge and its utilization.

Sizemore's project, entitled "Biomimetic Development for Extended Drug Release Contact Lenses to Treat Allergic Conjuctivitis", focuses on contact lenses that release medication in the eye during use. The soft lenses can be placed in a solution and reloaded with medicine.
 
"This is one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards granted by BMES," says Mark Byrne, assistant professor of chemical engineering who advised Sizemore on the project. "Only five of these awards are presented nationally each year."
