Textile Engineering Becomes Polymer and Fiber Engineering

The Department of Textile Engineering name change to the Department of Polymer and Fiber Engineering was approved by the AU Board of Trustees at its Nov. 18 meeting. A new curriculum, Polymer and Fiber Engineering, with two options - fiber and polymer - was approved by the Auburn University Curriculum Committee in September. The curriculum change is pending approval by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education at its December meeting.

"We are excited by this name change which more accurately describes the evolution of the Department and its programs to meet the challenges of the 21st Century," says Peter Schwartz, head of the department of Polymer and Fiber Engineering.

The new curriculum will emphasize courses in polymers, fibers, quality, and high-performance engineered materials (soft and hard) for use in biomedical, automotive, aerospace, structural/construction, marine, military, recreational and safety products.

The department is currently involved in research for the U.S. Army, Department of Homeland Security, NASA, National Science Foundation, National Textile Center and Pratt & Whitney Aerospace.
