Student Success Story

Jordan McLeroy, Chemical Engineering Student, May 2018

“During my sophomore year I was eager to gain work experience in the chemical engineering world and apply the principles and concepts I had been learning in class to solve real problems. When I asked other students where to go for help in finding internship opportunities, they sent me to Engineering Student Services and the Career Connections office in the Shelby Center.

There I spoke with Ms. Merrette Ische, the Engineering Career Coordinator, who took time to review the resume I sent her before the meeting so that she could make suggestions for its improvement. Ms. Ische was extremely helpful; she assisted me in writing a spectacular resume, told me of companies that have hired Auburn chemical engineering students, and encouraged me to apply for as many opportunities as possible.

Several months after I sent in my applications, I received a phone call with an offer for a summer internship at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. There I worked alongside a mentor on carbon dioxide removal system development for Mars mission life support. This was the internship of my dreams, and Engineering Career Connections helped make it possible.”

Kang Sun, Master of Science in Computer Science and Software Engineering – May 2014

"I was looking for a Software Engineering job in the networking sector in the second year of my master's degree. My resume was proofread and updated by staff from the Auburn University Career Center.  I received an email that Merrette Ische, engineering career coordinator, sent to our advisor about available Apple positions. After I spoke with Merrette I modified my resume following suggestions Apple made when meeting with her and she forwarded my resume (along with others that answered the ad) to the Apple recruiting team. One month later, I got an email from Apple and was invited to join an on campus interview event. It was an entire day of interviews and I met with four different Apple teams. I got a call from Apple three days later with an offer from three teams since my background was a good fit and I performed well in the interviews. I chose Networking QA team to begin my career."
