Katharine Ku
Director of the Office of Technology Licensing (OTL)
Stanford University

Ku, who has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Cornell and a master's degree in chemical engineering from Washington University, is a registered patent agent. From 1994-98, along with her position at OTL, Ku was responsible for Stanford's pre-award Sponsored Projects Office. She was vice president for business development at Protein Design Labs, Inc. in Mountain View, Calif. from 1990-1991. Prior to this, Ku spent 12 years at Stanford in various positions, worked at Monsanto and Sigma Chemical as a research scientist and administered a dialysis clinical trial at University of California.

Ku is currently a committee member of the National Academy of Sciences study entitled "Management of University Intellectual Property: Lessons from a Generation of Experience, Research and Dialogue."  She is a member of the Certified Licensing Professional Board of Governors.

Ku's seminar will highlight the truths and myths of the licensing program and the great challenge of creating a successful program. In 2008, Stanford received $62.5 million in gross royalty revenue from more than 600 technologies, with royalties ranging from $16 million to $37 million.
