Black Receives 2004 SME Award in Education
J T. Black, professor emeritus of Auburn University's Industrial and Systems
Engineering Department, was the winner of the 2004 Society of Manufacturing Engineering
International Honor Award in Education. Black was recognized recently at the
society's annual meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio for his development of manufacturing-related
curricula, fostering sound training methods and inspiring students to enter the
profession of manufacturing.
Before joining the faculty at Auburn in 1984, Black taught manufacturing engineering
to students at West Virginia University, the University of Illinois at Urbana,
the University of Vermont, the University of Rhode Island and The Ohio State University,
during a career that has lasted for more than 40 years.
He was the author of more than 70 technical publications and numerous books on
manufacturing processes and systems such as: "Material and Processes in Manufacturing,"
the leading textbook in the field, now in its 9
th edition; "The Design of the Factory with a Future"; and "Lean Manufacturing
Systems and Cell Design."
While at Auburn, Black received the Birdsong Superior Teaching Award, the top
honor in the College of Engineering and served as the editor-in-chief of the "Journal
of Manufacturing Systems and the "Journal of Manufacturing Processes."
