Last evening we brought the new College of Engineering web site online. Obviously the content that has been moved into the new templates reflects only a portion of the total content of the College of Engineering web site.
We have tried to make the change in a way that allowed us to keep alive as many links as possible to the content that has not been moved. We also wanted to ensure that during the next few weeks you would be able to easily access information on the old site.
At this time we have simply laid the new site on top of the old and redirected the www.eng.auburn.edu URL to the new site.
Please review your content and over the next four weeks ensure that any content that you wish to retain is linked to the new pages. We also suggest that you update links on your personal home and web pages.
At the end of the four-week period we will audit the site to identify pages that have not been linked to the new pages. These pages will be archived. You will still be able to access them through Engineering Network Services; they will simply no longer be available on the web.
We will then begin the process of moving the remaining College of Engineering content (minus personal pages) into the Virticle content management system. We suggest that you take the next month to carefully review and update your existing content and to develop any new content you would like to see added to the system.
Once you tell us that the content is ready to move, we will be working with the department coordinators to move it into Virticle.
During the next few months we also will be surveying users of the new site and watching web traffic. These efforts, combined with feedback from faculty and staff, will be used to make adjustments to the design, site map and navigation.
The goal of this web effort is to build a site that will be easier to use, engaging and contemporary in feel. We know that reviewing, editing and moving content into the Virticle system will require a significant effort on your part. However, with almost 17,000 pages on the old site, we were well past needing to do this clean up and review.
We hope that once the information is in the system, maintenance will be easier -- leaving us more time to explore the many ways the web can be used to showcase the College of Engineering.
Please see the attached documents to learn more about content management and site navigation.
Finally, we have moved a lot of content over the past few months in order to meet the ABET deadline. We need your help to identify typos, missing content and broken links. Please send feedback to Felipe Coimbra, our Webmaster, at coimbfs@auburn.edu.
Sincerely yours,
Cheryl Cobb
PS For those of you who use the old internal home page, we have recreated it under the faculty audience button. You might want to bookmark it.
