In the United States, accreditation is a non-governmental, peer-review process that assures the quality of the post-secondary education students receive. Educational institutions or programs volunteer to undergo this review periodically to determine if certain criteria are being met. ABET, Inc., is responsible for the specialized accreditation of educational programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. ABET accreditation is assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. For example, an accredited engineering program must meet the quality standards set by the engineering profession. An accredited computer science program must meet the quality standards set by the computing profession. It is the practice of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering to seek accreditation of its undergraduate programs in computing and engineering.

This interdisciplinary academic program is a joint offering of several colleges. Although the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering administers the program through the Department of Civil Engineering, the College of Agriculture and the College of Sciences and Mathematics are equal partners in supporting the curriculum.
