Physical Plant Building
Constructed: 1947
Architect: H.L. Holman, Ozark, AL
Architecture: Floor Plans
The Old Steam Plant, completed in April 1947, was designed by architect, H.L.
Holman of Ozark, Alabama and constructed by Daniel Construction Company of Birmingham
at a cost of $158,998.00. In the 1950's the unit was modified to burn gas, as
well as coal. An electrostatic precipitator was added in the '70s to remove the
coal dust from the air.
The Buildings and Grounds Complex was completed in October 1950. Preliminary
design was prepared by the AU Department of Buildings and Grounds for H.L. Holman,
the architect-of-record. It was an L-shaped building designed in character to
blend with the other buildings in the vicinity. The building, which consisted
of offices, shops, warehouse space, storage and the campus mail room, joined the
Central Steam Plant at the northwest corner. Vehicles and equipment were parked
within the compound defined by the building and a chain-link fence. The building
was constructed by A. Berney Jones of Montgomery, Alabama at a cost of $117,095.00.
These buildings are being demolished to make way for Phase II of the Shelby Center
for Engineering Technology.
