Training:
NCAT offers a range of training and educational opportunities for the asphalt
pavement construction industry as well as a class for university faculty. Short courses
in asphalt materials technology are designed specifically for project engineers, novice
or experienced mix designers, materials technicians, field inspectors,
or testing personnel.
A one-week Asphalt Technology Course and Superpave Volumetric Mix Design Workshop are also offered every year for State DOT, FHWA, and industry personnel.
Custom-designed workshops can be tailored to meet specific training needs and can be held at NCAT's facilities or anywhere in the world.
Education:
The primary NCAT thrust in education has been to prepare a standard college textbook on asphalt technology and to begin conducting preparatory courses for civil engineering faculty teaching materials technology. Both objectives have been accomplished.
The textbook, Hot Mix Asphalt Materials, Mixture Design and Construction, was published in January 1991. It was well received by civil engineering faculty and practicing engineers across the United States. This textbook has been revised twice; the newest (third) edition contains new sections covering topics such as manufacturing and evaluation of asphalt materials and aggregates, design of HMA mixtures, characterization of HMA in terms of engineering properties, and more. The textbook will help asphalt technology instructors ensure that future engineers and technicians have adequate training to satisfactorily perform their work. The book can be purchased from the National Asphalt Pavement Association Research and Education Foundation, 5100 Forbes Blvd., Lanham, MD 20706-4413.
