This session on sustainable pavements looks at the basic material components used to make our roadways: aggregate, asphalt, and concrete. Each material is discussed individually so the participant will understand the primary sustainability concerns related to each of the three aforementioned materials. The objectives of this session are as follows:

  1. The participant will learn the obstacles related to aggregate availability in the United States
  2. The participant will learn how to produce more sustainable asphalt mixtures
  3. The participant will learn how to reduce the carbon expenditures associated with aggregate production.
  4. The participant will learn the primary environmental burdens associated with concrete mixture production.
