Reinforced Concrete Design: T-beams and Compression Reinforcement

This course is the fourth in a series on the topic of reinforced concrete design following the American Concrete Institute’s Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11).  Fundamentals of flexural design and analysis of T-shaped cross sections and rectangular beams with tension and compressions reinforcement are presented.    

Learning Outcomes

 

Discussion and examples illustrate the behavior, principles, and calculations necessary to

• Apply the ACI Code provisions for effective flange width of T-beams
• Use the equivalent rectangular stress block to determine the factored moment resistance of a singly reinforced T-beam cross section
• Use the equivalent rectangular stress block and the strain diagram to determine the factored moment resistance of a beam cross section with tension and compression reinforcement
• Select a target value of net tensile strain and determine the areas of tension and compression reinforcement required to provide the desired moment resistance
• Calculate net tensile strain and determine whether the tension reinforcement meets the ACI Code requirements for maximum and minimum reinforcement
