Course Number: V14N_23

Course Description:  Every engineer, regardless of their discipline, is, or will be, responsible for managing projects.  There are many different types of projects, such as construction projects, optimization projects, and process improvement projects.  All of these projects follow the same general sequence: initiation, planning, execution, and closure.  Along the way, the project manager must stay abreast of, or “Control”, the activities of the project.  Therefore, activity definition and sequencing are critical planning requirements.  However, once the project reaches the execution phase, many activities are occurring simultaneously, and can be overwhelming to the project manager without a system in place to control the progress of the project.  Earned Value Analysis is a tool that has gained much attention primarily because it is a standard approach to controlling the project time and costs.  Many customers and clients are embracing earned value analysis because it provides a quantitative gauge that is quick and simple.
